Project summary

The project enhances stability in Lebanon by promoting local development, improving socio-economic conditions, and reducing conflict in the North East Bekaa area. It focuses on generating income and job opportunities in agriculture and food processing, particularly for women and youth, through sustainable practices. This leads to improved quality, diversification, and resilience of the local economy. Additionally, the project strengthens local governance to plan and promote regional economic development through participatory dialogue, improved services, and linkages, while fostering social cohesion.

Why was the project developed?

The project is important in communities in Lebanon's North East Bekaa because is boosts economic resilience, empowers women and youth, strenghtens local governance, and fosters social cohesion to reduce conflict and promote stability.

Examples of activities

  • Extension system for Quality Management System (QMS) and best practices adoption and certification for fruit value chains.
  • Outreach to farmers and installation of an aromatic and medicinal plants demo plot; construction of an AroMed distillation and drying unit.
  • Promoting farmer and producer aggregation for collective services and infrastructure development in the fruit and AroMed value chains.
  • Capacity building and business assistance for farmers, producers and targeted cooperatives.
  • Collective post-harvesting and processing infrastructure construction and development through a participatory process.
  • Student career orientation and extra-curricular activities for job opportunities along the value chains.
  • Training of trainers and apprenticeships for business services along agricultural value chains and for agriculture field agents, agribusiness technicians and skilled workers.
  • Development and implementation of local and regional development plans to respond to community needs along the targeted agricultural value chains and development and implementation of an advocacy and communication plan to the national level.
