Project summary

This project enhances the resilience and livelihoods of agropastoral communities in the Suguta Valley by collaborating with community structures and public and private actors. It seeks to reduce conflict and improve resilience against climate shocks through integrated landscape management. Key actions include building community-led conservancies, supporting improved governance for equitable livelihoods, and increasing economic prosperity for women, youth, and vulnerable populations through green economy value chains. The project also focuses on improving infrastructure, water resource management, and livestock production to support sustainable livelihoods and tourism.

Why was the project developed?

Kenya is frequently affected by natural disasters. Therefore, youth engagement in climate change issues is a priority.

Applicable activities

  • Informative education
  • Building resilience
  • Innovative solutions and skills

Examples of activities

  • Strengthen three existing conservancies to better include improved biodiversity initiatives, community engagement and create greater benefit through green economy livelihood initiatives.
  • Provide capacity building to community groups to strengthen their capacity to develop and manage conservancy management plans and support the establishment of conservancy infrastructure.
  • Build capacity of schools and members of civil society on technical knowledge and expertise on climate issues, formulating and promoting climate plans (including demonstrative activities as kitchen gardens/hydroponics and tree nurseries) at school, location, ward and county level so that children and young people can meaningful participate in climate change conversations and policy change.
  • Strengthen the capacity of local Technical and Vocational Education and Training institutions (also by greening the curriculum) to better assess labour market needs that emerge from conservation efforts; develop new curricula and increase access to finance for TVET institutions through fundraising initiatives.
  • Financial Support to Third Parties (FSTP) for Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) promoting community-based natural resource management and conservation activities/ecotourism/wildlife conservation, with priority for youth and women's associations (target of 50% women/ youth led CSOs).
